Standard body: ISO
Keywords: markup languages, SGML

Description:

Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) is the most widely used markup language. It is used to create and design web pages and other information which can be displayed in a web browser. HTML is an International standard and W3C specification.

Creating a document with the help of HTML is relatively easy. Each document contains HTML tags, attributes and a plain text. The HTML tags define the structure and the layout of an HTML document. An HTML document consists of two sections <head> and <body>. All information about the document (e.g. title, styles, and meta information) is located in the head section. The <body> tag defines the body section of the document and includes all the contents of a HTML document such as text, hyperlinks, images, tables, lists, etc.

There is a large number of tags, which can be used to format and layout the information in a Web page. The HTML tags are used to interpret the content of the page. The created HTML document can be read and displayed as web pages by a web browser such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.
